The most common

Is there a trope for something?
You can post such a question at Trope Finder. You'll need a TV Tropes account to do so - use the "Sign Up" option on the popup that opens to make one. You may need to wait a while before the account is activated and can be used.
I don't know the name of a work and want to find out.
You can post such a question at You Know That Show. You'll need a TV Tropes account to do so - use the "Sign Up" option on the popup that opens to make one. You may need to wait a while before the account is activated and can be used.
Is there a list of all tropes?
All tropes which have pages here, yes; here.

Accounts

Can I have more than one account?
No. You may have only one active account at a time. If you wish to change your account, contact us so we know you aren't doing something weird. If you are suspended, making a new account for any reason will get you permanently banned.
How do I change my name?
We currently do not have the means to do this. You'll need to make a new account.
How do I delete my account?
In your profile, there is a 'Delete Account' link. Clicking this will permanently delete all personal information from your user profile and deactivate your account. Your username cannot be used again by you or anyone else.
    I can't log in/register an account
You'll need to ask here. Please give us the name of the account, though, we can't do anything without it.
How do I find my posts/edits?
You need to copy https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/forum_troper_posts.php?fortroper= and https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor= to your address bar and put your handle after the =. Then you need to load the page.
I lost my account! How do I recover it?
Head over to this thread and read the linked post carefully. If that doesn't work you'll need to post here. You may need to create a new account to ask for help.
I am told I am banned! How do I appeal this?
Head over here. Do not make another account; we'll know and we'll never let you back in if you do so. If you cannot access that link, that means that we've decided to not consider an appeal. You may try to email us.

Editing

How do I make a works page? Can I do it for a work?
It's a bit complicated... see How to Create a Work Page. Yes, you can create a page for any work that the public can access in some fashion, see There Is no Such Thing as Notability - unless it's porn.
How do I make a trope page?
It's even more complicated... see TLP Guidelines.
Can I make a page on a work I wrote?
You can, but don't add Audience Reactions items about your own work. If the work isn't available to other people, if needs to go to Unpublished Works. And remember, once you have done the work page it belongs to the wiki. We do not allow authors to delete pages about their own work.
Can I edit a page on a work I wrote?
You can, but don't add or modify Audience Reactions items about your own work. Also, you don't own the page on the work. We do not allow authors to delete pages about their own work nor to aggressively control them.
How do I upload an image on the wiki?
First, you need to download the image onto your computer. Then you press "edit page", which will show an "Upload Image" button. Click on it and then either drag the file to the input box that opens or click on the input box to have it search your system. If the system accepts the file, it will then show you markup language that you can cut and paste into the edit page or a forum post. When you paste this markup language in, it will make the image appeear. You can add your own caption. If the system doesn't accept your file, you'll need to ask for help in Ask The Tropers.
How do I get rid of a page?
Put it on the Cut List, using the input form there and explaining why you want to get rid of it.
How do I link a single word?
Wrap it in {{ and }}. For example, Trope becomes {{Trope}}
How do I edit a page when it shows a padlock over the edit button?
Well, first try to click on the padlock:
  • If you then land on Locked Pages, you'll need to request an edit by posting it here. Remember to link the page you want to make the edit on!
  • If you don't land there, it means that there is a bug. Go back to the page you want to edit, click on the button "history" and try the edit button there.
How do I create my own troper page, then add it to the Contributors?
See here.
I want to create a new page, but there is already a different topic at the same address
You'll need to ask for help at Ask The Tropers.
How do I create a subpage to an existing page?
Underneath the title of a page, there is a button named "Create new". There may be many other buttons there; in that case it's usually the last one on the lower right. Click on that button and select the subpage you want to create. Then go to that page and click "edit page" in the upper left corner.
Can I get rid of the work page of my work?
No; The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours. Unless it's on DarthWiki.Unpublished Works because it's unpublished; in that case list it on Cut List.
Someone is behaving in a way I think is inappropriate. What do I do?
Depends on where it is happening:
  • If it's in a forum post, click on the button with three dots on the post in question. On the dropdown, select "Holler this" and put your complaint in the input box that opens.
  • If it's in a private message, go to Ask The Tropers and open a query. Make sure you check the "make private" checkbox before saving.
  • If it's elsewhere, go to Ask The Tropers and open a query but without checking "make private".
I can't create a troper page for my handle!
That is the case whenever you made an account whose name includes special characters or begins with a number. You'll need to make a new account without these.
    What is "natter"?
"Natter" is Conversation in the Main Page and refers to edits that appear to discuss, talk to, contest or justify an already existing entry. The wiki pages are not forum threads; please don't use them as such.
Actually, how do I edit a page?
See the "edit page" button in the upper left corner of the page? You need to click on it and it will load the edit page.
How do I index a page?
How do I rename a page?
See How to Move a Page. Do note that we use a different system - custom titles - to change the capitalization of a title or to add punctuation.
How do I edit a redirect?
Copy https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/wysiwyg_source_editor.php?groupname=Main&title=WikiSandbox&load=source into the address bar of your browser and change "WikiSandbox" to the title of the redirect. If the redirect is in a namespace other than "Main", you need to change the "Main" as well. Then you load the so modified URL.
What is the Related To page?
The Related To page (Example) lists all the wiki pages on TV Tropes that link to a given page. It also lists "Inbounds" which is the number of links outside of TV Tropes that link to a given page, excluding search engines.
A string of words is creating a link where I don't want it!
That can happen when your word is in CamelCase format, as the wiki interprets it as a link. Put it between [= and =]

Discussion

How do I post in a forum thread?
You need to go to the last page, which can be reached by clicking the >> button. Then go to the bottom of the last page and hit the "add post" button; it opens the form through which you can add new posts.
How do I upload an avatar?
Go to the upper right corner of a page and click on it. A dropdown opens, with one entry saying "Profile" which should link here. On that page you see your account name and above it an image - click on it and it will show two buttons one of which has a + sign. Click on it and then either drag the file to the input box that opens or click on the input box to have it search your system. The file has to be already on your computer before you can upload it. If the system accepts the file, you'll need to hit "submit". It lands you back on the profile page, there you need to click the other button left of the + one. It lands you on the avatar gallery, where you then select the file you want to use as an avatar. If anything about this doesn't work, you'll need to ask for help here.
What are these posts which are bordered with red and have a reddish background?
They are statements by the staff of TVTropes where they are making a statement in their role as staff, such as stating a policy. The site staff participates in discussions like any other troper, but if you see one of them making a statement in this style you better pay attention to it.
How do I see my private messages?
Head over here.
How do I discuss a trope?
Head over to the Trope Talk forum and start a discussion (the form for doing this is at the bottom of the page). Note that this is only for chatting about existing trope pages; individual examples should be discussed on the discussion page and new trope proposals belong to the Trope Launch Pad.
How do I find old Projects, Trope Repair Shop and Image Pickin' threads?
See the guidance here.
How do I change the title of a forum thread?
On each post of the forum, there is a button with three dots. On the dropdown that opens when you click it, hit "Holler this" and post the title you want in there, along with an explanation of why you want a change. A moderator will review and either accept or decline the request.
How do I post a YouTube video on the forum?
See here.
